Rudbeckia occidentalis Green Wizard

Rudbeckia occidentalis Green Wizard

Rudbeckia occidentalis 'Green Wizard' is a curious and extraordinary plant for the back of borders. This unusual coneflower has bright green sepals where most have petals, with the main feature being a striking near-black central cone. An unusual fresh cut flower, it's long lasting in water, and great in dried arrangements. Flowering in summer, this hardy perennial is easy to grow, quickly forming a good sized plant with plenty of lush green foliage. 'Green Wizard' is always a talking point! Height: 120-152cm (4-5ft).

Sowing

Sow from late winter to mid summer 6mm (0.25in) deep in a good seed compost. Make sure the compost is moist but not wet and seal inside a polythene bag until after germination usually 5-21 days at 18-20C (65-70F). The seed usually germinates within this time but if not, place in a fridge, and leave at 3-5C for 2-3 weeks, then return to the warmth. Inspect regularly while in the fridge and remove immediately they start to germinate.

Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Later plant out 30cm (12in) apart in full sun and ordinary well drained garden soil.

More Info

Feed and water rudbeckia plants regularly. Deadhead faded rudbeckia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Cut plants down to the crown at the end of the season and cover with a dry mulch of straw or wood chippings to protect from winter extremes.
